A journey through sound: dense, teeming, vindictive and bewitching. These 3 improvisers from the Grand Chahut Collectif like to emphasize the constant evolution of their music by not only using wide-ranging techniques inspired by concrete as well as electro-acoustic music, but also by customizing their instruments and exploring their timbres. Their music moves around, undulates, squeals and makes images spring forth.
During their first tour in May 2010, the 3 members of Nicht Rio travelled in the South of France with a hundred-year-old baby grand piano. From Marseille to Toulouse, they shared the stage with artists such as Sébastien Cirotteau, Emmanuel Cremer, Charles Fichaux, Bastien Pelenc, Heddy Boubaker, Olivier Germain-Noureux and Laurent Rochelle. Their first concert as a trio was played in the Notre-Dame Chapel in the tiny village of Fabrezan during the "Son MiRé" festival. Here is the recording of this concert. As you will no doubt notice, a strong wind was blowing in the plain that day.

Whereas his earlier solo record, "materials", was the result of a research work in studio, "solo" shows how Jonas Kocher brillantly uses his accordion in concert. His music caries in itself huge contrasts, between reserve and explosion, as if this dualitly was engraved in the back and forth bellows's mouvement. Alternations of low and high frequencies, slappings and breaths build a perfectly controlled form inside the improvised frame.

Sébastien lately begins drums and school courses at the Dante Agostini School, in Bordeaux (France). The alternative world in which he moves brings him to the noise music band Madala, with whom he’s formed and trained to the stage in the 90’s. Bands such as Sonic Youth, Bastärd or Sister Iodine influence him and push him to immerse himself in transcendental forms of the music. He discovers free improvisation, at Music’Halle, the modern music school of Toulouse, alongside Emmanuel Petit, Marc Demereau and Fabrice Charles. In the 2000’s, he lives in Paris. His meetings on a few stages in Paris lead him to work with several free improvisation bands such as Frédéric Blondy, Pascal Battus, Christine et Sharif Sehnaoui, Agnès Palier, Stephan Rives, Jean Bordé, Jack Wright…
In 2007, he moves to Crest, Drôme. He meets the Grand Chahut Collectif with whom he has obvious affinities. In 2008, he performs his first bass drum solo, in the Petits Chahuts Itinérants Festival, and sets up three free music trios : Tu Tapes Trop Fort, Asile Mabuse and Nicht Rio. He also works as a musician and an actor for the 36 Du Mois Compagny since 2002.

What about improvising as we’re use to, but on a much longer time ? How to still produce then interesting music ? How to keep the listener attention ? On that record we tried to explore deeply a few differente way to play, following a discret time line, improvising in the instant but also with a projection of the music on a larger scale.

Recorded in Krakow, 07.07.2010

Diatribes, a strongly libertarian ensemble, began its existence in a Geneva basement in Winter 2004. Adapting the improvised and experimental music languages of today, the duo is highly reactive, dynamic, percussive and/or textured. Initialy a trio, diatribes became a polymorphous formation, accuratly incomplete, extending each time its spectrum with guest musicians, from freejazz to electroacoustic improv, from loud sound wall to intimistic acoustic details, crossing the road of Barry Guy, Keith Rowe, Jason Kahn, Jacques Demierre, Christian Weber, Ernesto Rodriguez, Tomas Korber, Jean Bord, Mick Beck, etc, travelling through europe to create new entities, with Adbul Moimme in Portugal, Hannah Marshall in Engla! nd, Rafal Mazur in Poland or HKM+ in Germany.
http://www.dincise.net/diatribes

Rafal Mazur’s involvement with music began in his youth with violoncello studies in Krakow. He switched to bass guitar in the late 1980’s. Since 2000 he has played an acoustic bass guitar built to his own specifications by luthier Jerzy Wysocki. He has developed an advanced and individual approach to his instrument, and to improvisation in general, in which sonority, extended technique and gesture combine effortlessly in performance. He has taken an important role in Kraków to support young artists and improvised music. A founder of the ImproArt studio of improvisation, he has performed jazz and improvised music in clubs and festivals across Poland and Europe, and in China, South Korea and Israel. In recent years he has collaborated with Lisa Ullen, Frederic Blondy, Charlotta Hug, Raymond Strid, Keir Neuringer, Zsolt Sores and Attila Dóra and others.! His current focus is the trio Ensemble 56. He is an organizer of the Laboratory of Intuition, a series of spontaneous art presentations in Kraków. Mazur’s main field of interest and activity is collective and solo free/spontaneous improvisation. In his practice as an improvising musician and on his way to mastery/artistry he studys Chinese philosophy (Jagiellonian University). He regards Taoism as a strong base for the enrichment of the improviser’s attitude, and to this end he practices the Taoist’s martial art TaiJi Quan Chen. For Mazur, following the masters of Chinese philosophy and martial arts is crucial in the development of a state of mind prepared for the unexpected situations an improviser encounters in the act of collective free improvisation.

Composer, double bass player and electronic musician, Dragos Tara spends his time between composition and improvisation. His musical and extra-musical collaborations are motivated by an interst in the game theory, the dive! rsion of social rituals and the extension of instrument and body by technology.

[insubcd02] DIATRIBES & ABDUL MOIMEME complaintes de marée basse
insubcd02_frontweb.jpg

:EA/free/improv:
After the trio with Phonotopy, but recorded a couple of month earlier, Diatribes proposes with Abdul Moimême a new electroacoustique oriented album, where the instrumentation distinction is lost to the benefit of a sounds ensemble strongly linked by skeazing ropes and under permanent tension. Some metalico-organics improvisations develloping under harbour influence, superpostion of poetic evocations like an high-tech nostalgia.

abdul moimême: two prepared guitars, metalic objects, springs, cymbals, metronome
d'incise: laptop, objects, various instruments, snare drums, bow, cymbals, gramophone
cyril bondi: drums, percussions, bow, cymbals, objects, small instruments

Diatribes is the Geneva-based duo of d’incise, who plays laptop, objects, and percussion, and Cyril Bondi, playing drums and percussion. First coming together in 2004, the duo’s subtle distinguishing mark develops out of Bondi’s relationship to free jazz and d’incise’s relationship to ambient electronica and free improvisation. As environmentally diffused as the sounds may become, Bondi is often knitting at pulse, creating polyrhythms and a momentum that animates the whole, keeping it moving while d’incise pulls sounds from the ether or the street. The spontaneous character of the music is insistently maintained by working constantly with other players, as if Diatribes is only complete when it’s Bondi, d’incise and someone else, as if Diatribes is a principle that always includes the other. The duo has recently released three works, each with a third musician; as different as the guests are, Diatribes manages to create a distinct identity.

Multitude, with bassist Barry Guy, is inevitably influenced by Guy’s own spectacular virtuosity, but it’s also fascinating listening to hear Guy working so intently with improvisers whose fundamental approaches are generally less linear than his own. There is a very close rhythmic connection between Guy and Bondi, evident in the percussive mix of rapid pizzicato bass and drums on “le poids des humeurs.”  D’incise’s sounds arise amongst the other two and it is frequently difficult here to demarcate the three. When Guy plays arco, as on “corrosion du possible,” this blurring of identity is even more pronounced, the bassist creating a forest of harmonics and scrapes, sputtering rhythmic figures and sudden movements between registers that seem to spring from and include all the sounds around him (including here the added clarinet of Benoît Moreau). Diatribes, for their part, build up broken fields of percussion and electronic sound, sounding as if their instruments are literally intertwined in the strings of Guy’s bass. Together the three create a world of micro-rhythms and intervals, new patterns interspersing themselves in gaps in time and register.

On Complaintes de Marée Basse with the Lisbon-based guitarist  Abdul  Moimême, the three musicians seem to be much more aligned in their approach.  Moimême plays two prepared table-top guitars, metal objects and small instruments, and both he and d’incise have cymbals in their list of instruments. The playful sound sources extend to Moimême playing metronome and d’incise gramophone. At times the sound is almost industrial—the scraping of metal, the sound of large objects falling—at others it has the most remarkable delicacy, fragile glissandi and barely audible string scrapings. Identity and perspective are constantly changing here. Little noises arise and are gradually subsumed into louder ones or else disappear like unknown but evidently endangered insects in a distant ecosystem.  A snare drum rhythm beats against the scratch of a gramophone needle on an exit groove. The sounds are at times so intimate you feel that you are ear-next to a bowed cymbal or a mallet-struck string; at other times the sonic vocabulary of random echoing metal suggests a freight yard, industrial noise in which sound is only a side effect of another process. It is this shifting perspective, this fluctuating succession of different scales—from closet to airplane hangar—that makes this the remarkable dreamscape that it is.

The third Diatribes performance, Partielle d’averse (available as a limited edition mini-CD with a hand-made cover or as a download), was made with Phonotopy, also known as Yann Leguay who’s playing tennis cythar and electric racket. Just over 23-minutes long, it’s a beautifully sustained single piece, Leguay’s transformed sports equipment a perfect complement to Bondi and d’incise. The work is the kind of transforming soundscape that one associates with AMM, a gradual loss and development of identity through audition.

Invisibility, anonymity, and pseudonymity are clearly important here (another Diatribes performance with HKM+ and other German musicians was “recorded in an abandoned building in Leipzig”), for this is music shaped by the acuity of consciousness and the porous frontier of identity, whether of the sound, the instrument or the maker. Watching this music being made might diminish its sonic appeal; living here only in the ear, it elaborates on mysteries of identity which are matters of both cognition and psychology. It’s fitting that some of the works themselves inhabit an area both grey and plural, as limited edition works of art or downloads.

Dragos Tara and d'incise are two higly active improvisors from the french-speaking part of switzerland.
Dragos has a strong background as composer for instruments and electronics, he takes part of the
Rue du Nord collective that organises many concerts and an annual festival in Lausanne.
d'incise works in the electroacoustic fields, composed and improvised, he is the half of the diatribes duo and coordinates the Insubordinations netlabel.
They've played togheter in many one-shot formation! ss since a couple of years.

In novembre 2009 they made a trip to Paris and joined for a concert the amazing alto saxphonist Christine Sehnaoui Abdelnour.
Christine has develloped since 1997 a strong personal language, deeply sensitive, expanding  new techniques and complex patterns, exploring the microtonal aspects of the saxophone or its high-pitched tone that sounds like electronic tones made on an acoustic instrument.

The music that came out of this meeting is dense, the perception of the instruments is perturbate by thier constant roles changes, each being able to be pecussive, tonal or textural at any time.

«d'incise, our usual suspect when it comes to freejazz, teamed up with Marcel Chagrin (guitar, bass drum) and the Heu{s-k}ach project was born. This is ultimately a live only project, so all the recordings you'll find here were taken from live gigs. And believe me, you can never be so minimal as this. Effects and guitar effects. Nothing more.
'Un' marks a new direction for d'incise's musical projects. Freejazz as the starting point but with total experimentation as the language underneath. You can never have too many layers of sound, I guess. Absolutely awesome if you're into experimental freejazz and beyond..» Pedro Leitão

The album starts with sounds of crushing objects, cymbals and tones of an electric guitar. "Deux" is more quiet and the drony guitar sounds are supported by electronic sounds and bells or something like Tibitan singing bowls. The stringsounds roll closely with the ongoing sounds of these instruments. "Trois" builds up very slowly and the alternation of warm bellsounds and harsh electronics fits really well and moves into a restless noisy end. The last track "Quatre" ends also with a great diversity of sounds and atmospheres created by for example slide guitar, high bell tones. "Un" is the first CD of this new project of the free-minded d'incise. I like the calm atmosphere which he created with Marcel Chargin and the exploration of the most intense combination of soundwaves and rhythms.

Vehemently critical of the destructive behavior of industrial civilization, in his work (as a composer, performer, bandleader, writer, interdisciplinary artist and curator) he seeks to bring audiences into a state of emotional and intellectual curiosity that meets the conditions for meaningful dialogue with and transformation of the culture at large. He has collaborated with Rafal Mazur since 1999 and works with a wide and undefined network of inspiring musicians, including turntablist DJ Sniff and the contemporary music group Ensemble Klang.

The Ensemble Rue du Nord's music is shimmering, noisy, subtle, nervous, free. Each musician is involved entirely in the sound, the concentration and the listening, thus taking part in collective construction of a new sound universe. The marriage between acoustic and electronic instruments offers a very rich pallet of timbres and gives to the ensemble its unique identity.
Far from the Bregovic like Balkan music stereotypes, the Ensemble Rue du Nord last project presents for the first time in Switzerland some of the most active and promising musicians of the Balkans emerging experimental scene. Since 2007, the ERN intensively collaborated with these musicians, doing concerts in Mostar, Sarajevo, Belgrade, Sofia, Skopje and Pristina within the framework of the "Swiss-Balkan Creative Music" project.
The aim of the Swiss-Balkan Creative Music Project is to developp new links between swiss and balkan musicians in the field of contemporary improvised music. The working sessions will give the musicians the possibility to explore new and fresh practices in electro-acoustic improvised music. The music is made of sonic architectures, colours and textures and moves between pure sound and abstract noise complexity.
The project is realised in 3 phases : April 2007, November 2007 and spring 2008. For the first and second phase, the Ensemble Rue du Nord is travelling and meeting different local musicians. The third phase will permit to have several concerts in different cities and mix the balkan musicians in the spirit of the « Company Weeks » by Derek Bailey.

Morsure Souffle' is an amazing and fresh-sounding album. It's an album that, while retaining the already well-known 'd'incise trademark sound', it's also somewhat of a departure from his previous work. d'incise sounds much more detached from synthesis based and computer generated sounds, and almost completely embraces field recordings and found sounds as 'prime matter' for this work. The pieces are so much more complex and unpredictable, that you never know what you'll be getting next, until it hits you.

“Stase”, recorded during the Mapping Festival, April 2008, is a 22-minutes-piece, based on prepeared sounds from an acoustic guitar. Drones and textures are flickering around in the beginning, shifting from front to back and increase to a point, where all sound-elements seem to thicken to a massive, pending drone. “Contre Stase”, recorded in an empty room in an empty house, deals with a similar concept. All sound-textures and layers concentrate on a point, but after a short periode of attraction, the elements seem to drift away, floating into open spaces.
